OUR PRIESTLY SPIRITUALITY:
addressed to the clergy of Willemstad on the concluding day of the annual retreat of the Clergy.
- On March 2008 by Mgr. Luis Antonio Secco SDB

I hope that from this retreat we come out renewed in our identity and live our priestly ministry as a gift for the faithful and for the Christian community we are serving.  Let us always remember that we act “in persona Christi” when we celebrate the Sacraments and preach His Word.

A priestly spirituality characterized by discipline, a schedule, a pastoral program; weekly, monthly, yearly, etc…                 A priestly spirituality is sustained by moments of prayer, scripture readings and study…, and not only by the information that the media transmits. Our on-going formation is equally important to give testimony and reason to our faith confronted by the challenges of this materialistic and highly “globalized” world. The common danger is being “stuck” because we live on an island, a reduced world, hence, the need to augment our priestly life.

The Diocese is willing to organize formation programs (course on theology, on pastoral, etc.) and to grant some priests the opportunity to undergo a pastoral renewal for some months and even a sabbatical year.

Another important element for our priestly spirituality is our presence in the places and events of the life of our community; parish, school and families. Make ourselves “visible” in the parish life; in celebrations, meetings, home visits, school visits, and in different socio-cultural groups, etc. Take time for spiritual guidance and sacramental Confession.

A balanced priestly spirituality whose personal agenda is diocesan; one that puts priority on community affairs, priestly encounters (i.e.; K.B.) and also compliance with the norms stipulated and the responsibilities to the Diocese like; financial reports, special collects, annual reports on statistics, care and maintenance of the parish books, etc.

Some points to consider in order to develop our priestly spirituality:

1.       The way we live as priests is more important than the activities we do.

“Show me your humanity and I will tell who your God is -  (Theofilo of Antioch)

2.       What is more important is what Christ made out of us, not what we made out of ourselves.  In other words, Let Jesus Christ acts in us.  Blessed Charles de Foucauld said;”What would Jesus do in my place?”..

3.       It is more important is to live out the priestly unity than to accomplish a more efficient job but, individually.

So, mutual cooperation is very important in our pastoral work.

4.       It is important to allow time to form us a vision (pastoral) together, than to do everything in haste and resulting half accomplish.

5.       It is more important and even efficient that we accept and carry the Cross, than other practical realization. The importance of accepting pain with faith that unites us with the mystery of Christ’s salvation. On the other hand there remains the natural desire to accomplish all things with success and the gratification of the pastoral work.

6.       It is more important to give a testimony of our faith than to feel obliged to satisfy the “needs” of all who come to us.  These may affirm our place in them but there is the danger of superficial and even fragmentized relationship, and an absence of a pastoral goal.
